How to Ease the Back-to-School Transition For Kids

With July kicking in, many schools have re-opened in Karachi specially and many are due to re-open in a couple of weeks. No matter how long the vacations are, it is always tough for the majority of children to resume their school. While many are excited for a new class, teachers, friends, and not to forget the excitement of new books, bags, uniforms and stationary; going back to school may still be daunting and the children might experience some levels of anxiety after such a long gap.

Here are some ways to ease the stress in children and make them all happy and excited about the new beginnings and academic year.

1. Set a routine prior to the start of school

While children are on their vacations, their routine also disrupts and we as parents tend to be lenient with their activities, sleep patterns and eating routines. A sudden change to a strict routine will only cause more anxiety, clinginess, temper problems and more tantrums. Start with getting back on track gradually and during the vacations closer to reopening date. Stabilize things so the transition gets easier on their minds and they are relaxed and fresh.

2. Prepare with them

Get them involved in back to school talks and how they are going to enjoy interacting with new fellows and teachers. Take part in covering notebooks and getting their pencil cases and bags ready. Buy them their favourite stationery so that they are all excited about the new beginnings. Talk out their fears and ensure them about your constant support.

3. Have some family time on a daily basis

Set a time in the evening or after dinner when the whole family sits down and have random conversations or laughter sessions. It relaxes the mind of not only the child but the parent also and refreshes the brain. Make it a habit to do so even after school starts.

4. Give your children the special 10 minute time every morning in bed

Children tend to be the clingiest in the morning when you wake them up for school. Dedicate minutes from your busy time and hug and snuggle them till they wake up. It does wonders and they get up with a happy mood all set for their day.

Do let us know of any tips that you follow to help them get over the back-to-school anxiety.
