If you have ever heard the Filipino proverb, “Knowledge is wealth that can’t be stolen”, you most likely thought that the meaning was more metaphorical than actual. However, SOC (Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy) Outreach and BBDO have collaborated to bring this metaphor to life by creating the world’s first bulletproof book, titled Knowledge is Bulletproof.
The book is written by Pakistani writer, Sanam Maher and tells the story of Shazia Ramzan and Kainat Riaz, the two girls who were shot with Malala Yousafzai and who later went on to become advocates for education.
It is 150-pages long and is bound with a special layering of bullet-resistant Kevlar XP fibre which is strong enough to resist a 9mm bullet fired from as close as five metres (the same distance that Malala was shot from)!
SOC Outreach is a community engagement program spearheaded by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, which works with educational institutions and organisations to instil critical thinking in the next generation of Pakistanis. The project aims to raise awareness about the importance of education, inspire girls and women to acquire education irrespective of the challenges, emphasize the strength of Pakistani women who choose education and highlight the resilience of Pakistanis.
According to Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, “Knowledge is bulletproof and that is the message behind this unique book. A cover design is supposed to give an explanation of what the book carries, and we decided to do the most meaningful and relevant cover possible, to accompany the meaningful and inspiring story inside. If our message was that knowledge can continue despite bullets, then a book itself should be literally capable of repelling a bullet. In this case you CAN judge the book by its cover!”
She said that the aim behind the book and its story was to bring attention to the importance of education in Pakistan and that Shazia and Kainat’s story was an inspirational one for all Pakistanis. The organisation hopes to raise funds to support education in Pakistan by telling their stories to the world in a unique way.
Knowledge is Bulletproof features photography by Insiya Syed and is a limited edition collector’s item; hence, it’s relatively steep price. All the proceeds will go to aid schools including one in Swat Valley for girls.
If you purchase this book, you will not only be contributing towards the improvement of education in Pakistan, especially for girls; you will also be the proud owner of a limited edition book which is the only one of its kind in the world!
