Want to be a ‘fashionista’ mom at school?

While I was in my last few weeks of pregnancy, my driver decided it was the optimal time for him to move on to greener pastures leaving his baji a.k.a me high-and-dry.

Luckily my ‘knight in shining armour’ decided to step up and offered to pick the kids from school. Now they say that true love is handing over the remote but truth be told, the second your kid(s) starts school, true love is taking over the school-run. He came back that day windblown; his perfect coif now disheveled, tie loose, sleeves rolled up, a school bag on each shoulder, dusty shoes! But the best part, his first words,

“Oh my God! HOW do you do this? And how are these moms so decked up!?!?!?!”

My question exactly! While I can hardly brave the sun and sweat in a minute if my hair isn’t up in a knot, fanning myself desperately with a school bag, suppressing the urge to psycho-scream out at my super-hyper kids…there passes by a perfectly manicured fellow mum in her latest lawn suit with her voluminous blow-dried hair, skinny legs and a swing in her step.

And of course, her perfectly well behaved kids follow suit…leaving me awestruck and severely jealousy-stricken!

While I can still dress half decently for pick-up, the mere thought of even leaving home for the morning drop is unfathomable! Hubby’s increasing business trips, however, translate into mornings when I need to appear a lot more ‘stylo’ and a lot less psycho and here are my tools for ‘success’:

  1. Oversized Sunnies

The quintessential tool to disguise those eyebags…and the bigger the better! Invest in a trendy yet timeless pair to carry you across fads. Better yet, blind them with mirrored sunnies! The second any one looks your way they’ll catch their own reflection and embarrassedly look away before picking up on your lack of sleep…or moisturizer!

  1. Tinted Lip Stain

My secret weapon is a tiny nude lipstick tucked away in my purse for those days when I run out of the door without even having had a chance to glance into the mirror. Light colours are easiest to apply and while you are at it, stain your cheeks and eyelids too giving a subtle glow in mere seconds! I use my selfie camera for application 😉

  1. Effortless Clothing

Seasonal closet cleansing means I rid myself of the old-fashioned and ill-fitted while trying on and separating some classic easy breezy pieces to slip on at crunch time. Shorter oversized shirts with fitted tights are my favourite. Opt for prints – they hide the wrinkles! Georgette shirts with jeggings look good and are easy too! Keep them in a separate section of your wardrobe for easy access and please and of course, make sure they’re flattering!

  1. Hair Accessories

You overslept and didn’t have time to shower? Dry shampoo is your best friend! I love Toni & Guy soft hold for wow-volume and textured ponytails. Sparkly ties and hair clips are a great way to tackle the heat while dressing up your hairstyle!

  1. Pumps

Peep-toe-pumps, especially the back open ones are the best way to hide feet greatly in need of some TLC without melting under the afternoon sun. It goes without saying that bright colours and studs will elevate your look above and beyond!
